PETER SAUL

On 24 March 2012, Mary Boone Gallery will open at its Chelsea location an exhibition of new paintings by PETER SAUL.

For his first solo exhibition with the Gallery, Peter Saul skewers the fixations of contemporary culture with new works in the distinctive style that he has developed in over fifty years of painting. Synthesizing Pop, Surrealism, Expressionism, and an irreverent Underground Comic aesthetic, Saul’s work has provided license to waves of contrarian Artists, yet remains difficult to classify.

His painting is instantly recognizable by its lurid colors, distortion of form and scale, patchy modeling, and deft brushwork. To invent the subjects of his paintings, Saul rapaciously conflates current events with political incorrectness and outlandish humor. His targets in the current show include Wall Street excess, national security, female empowerment, obsession with diet, sex, and the hegemony of art movements from Abstract Expressionism to Pop.

The exhibition, at 541 West 24 Street, will run through 28 April 2012. For further information, please contact Ron Warren at the Gallery, or visit our website www.maryboonegallery.com.
